CABOOSE

For those of you who haven’t yet seen the Soggy Bottom and Deep Cut RR layout, now is the time to make plans to stop in. This fantastic model railroad will only be on display for a few more days. Then it gets removed to make room for an even larger HO scale layout to be built by the Hocking Valley Model Railroad Club. This large 30×15 ft. layout will become a permanent fixture in the shop. We will be sure to document its construction in the Photo Gallery of our web site so those of you unable to visit us on a regular occasion can still see it being built.

We are also about to begin construction of out\r indoor rock crawling pit “Box of Rocks”. This will be located in the area between our Service Counter and the bathrooms. Again, we will document construction in our web site photo gallery. Any donation of rocks would also be appreciated 🙂

Finally, we have solidified plans for the first Lancaster Train and Plastic Model Swap Meet. It will be held at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds in the Ed Sands Bldg. on Saturday, March 25th from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. We hope to have a number of operating train layouts available for viewing. Dealer tables will be $10. Admission is only $3, or if you wish to also attend the FORKS R/C Model Show next door, then a combo ticket is only $5. Women, children, and military veterans with ID get in free. And parking is free! Call 740-653-0404 for table reservations.

NEWS

We are now open at 342 Lincoln Ave. in Lancaster!

After months of planning and quite a few days of blood and sweat, we are now settled into our new home at 342 Lincoln Ave. in Lancaster. We are only a few short steps east of our old location – closer to Memorial Dr. (Rt. 33).

Our official ribbon cutting event was held Friday, November 11th. We had a number of loyal customers and members of the Hocking Valley Model Railroad Club in attendance.

We have nearly tripled our old size and have nearly 8,000 sq. ft. of retail space.

What are we doing with all of that space, you say? Well, most of it is occupied by retail stock. We were quite crammed in our old space. In addition to the stock, we now have the HO Hocking Valley Model RR layout on display in the front of the shop, and the Soggy Bottom Boys On30 layout on display in the larger part of the shop.

There are lots more large aircraft on display from the ceiling. And we have a big space where all of our train sets can be viewed. We also have the “Hangar” where we can conduct clinics and seminars, or you can just hang out and spend some time. There is a kid’s area with a Thomas play table available for use. And the “Canteen” where you can usually find coffee, a cookie jar, and on weekends, some fresh popcorn.

Enjoy the photos below and stop in and see our new space when you have time.

EVENTS

Black Friday & Small Business Saturday

We have not had a chance to have a proper grand opening sale, so we will be holding our largest sale of the year on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday November 26th.

In addition to the sale items, we will have door prizes, a model display with a People’s Choice Award, refreshments, product demos, and Christmas Trains.

Doors open at 8:00 a.m. both days

2016 Model Show

oin us the weekend of November 25th and 26th for an all scales, all categories model show.  Bring in your prized work of art and display it for everyone to see. We will hold a People’s Choice Award where viewers can vote for the model of their choice. The winner will receive a Smoke Stack Gift Card.

2016 Holiday Hours

Starting Sunday, November 27th we will begin our 2016 Holiday hours. That means we will be open on Sundays through December from Noon to 5:00 p.m.

With our move to a larger building, we have reserved space for classes and seminars. We are calling this space our Hangar area and plan to give it an aeronautical theme that should remind you of an old military airfield. The Hangar area will be large enough that we can conduct classes and seminars on a variety of topics. Some examples are How To Airbrush, Building Your First Layout, Weathering Techniques, and Tuning Your R/C Car. While these are only examples, it gives you an idea of some of the topics we are planning.

Shortly after move in, we are planning our first event to be a model show. Keep watching this newsletter and our web site for additional details. We are looking forward to a very busy and entertaining Fall and Winter season.

NEWS

The Smoke Stack Hobby Shop is moving to a new home!!!

As we announced last month, we are moving to a new home. We will be one block east of our current location (closer to Memorial Dr.). Our new address will be 342 Lincoln Ave. We do not have a specific opening date yet, but anticipate it will be sometime in mid-October. The new building is undergoing extensive renovations. You can follow the progress in our photo gallery.

The Big Dog Scenic Railway Has Been Retired!

Yes, it’s true. Our railraod around the shop has been retired in anticipation of our move. Labor Day weekend marked the last run of the famous railway. During it’s nearly three-year run around the upper reaches of the shop, it has logged almost 233 miles! That is the equivalent of 11,179 O scale miles, or nearly 4 times across the U.S. A final video was shot by our Director of Multi-Media (Colton) and is posted on YouTube. You can see the video by clicking here.

OWN A PIECE OF THE BIG DOG RWY!! Many of the buildings and scenery items found along the railroad are for sale and are listed at a great price. Stop in the shop for a price list (or call us and we will be happy to check an item for you).

Although this version of the Big Dog Scenic Ry has ended, never fear. We are planning a new version for our new location. This one will be at eye level so that all the details can be seen. It will feature some interactive items where you will be able to push buttons to make things happen. And if you are interested in helping with this project, see more details in the Caboose section below.

EVENTS

The Hocking Valley Model Railroad Club continues construction of an HO scale layout in the shop. The first layer of scenery is in place. Roads, buildings, and trees are next! Check out the photo gallery for all the photos showing the layout in progress.

3rd Annual Smoke Stack Hobby Shop Field Trip

Our 3rd annual SSHS Field Trip was a success. A full bus load of train enthusiasts enjoyed a day of train watching and museum displays in Bellevue, Ohio on August 20th. We enjoyed a private tour of the museum, a buffet lunch, and an afternnon of train watching inside the triangle at Bellevue. It was a warm, sunny day and the rain held off until just after we boarded for our return trip. Some photos are posted in our gallery.

We have had many generous offers to assist us in our forthcoming move. We truly appreciate everyone’s generosity. Because the building is still undergoing renovation and has not yet had a final inspection, we do not have a move in date set. Once we do, we will target a moving day and have a sign-up sheet for those who would like to volunteer their talents to help us move.

One of our customers is currently doing some research into organizing an O scale train club to be located inside the hobby shop.. This will ultimately be the new and improved version of the Big Dog Scenic Railway. If you would be interested in joining with others to design and build the new Big Dog Scenic Ry. layout, please let us know. You can send an email to sales@smokestackhobby.com indicating your interest, call us at 740-653-0404, or stop in and chat about the great possibilities.

NEWS

The Smoke Stack Hobby Shop is moving to a new home!!!

Some of you may have heard the rumors, and we are pleased to announce they are true. The SSHS will be moving to a larger facility sometime this fall. It is located only a block away from our current location, but will be almost three times the size. The building is currently undergoing renovations and once they near completion, we will be able to announce our moving date.

The Hocking Valley Model Railroad Club will be joining us at our new location and they have plans for a large, 2-level layout (approx 35 ft. x 15 ft.) highlighting the south-central Ohio area.

We also expect to have a large O-scale layout in place, a rock crawling pit, an area reserved for classes and real-time building (how to airbrush, how to lay track, building models, etc.), and many more features which we will announce down the road.

This new home for the SSHS will dovetail nicely into our 40th year anniversary in 2017. We at the shop are very excited at all the possibilities ahead and want to thank all our customers for helping make this possible!!

Atlas C420 Phase 2B – Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway #365

ALCO built a total of 131 Century 420 locomotives between 1963 and 1969, when the builder ceased all new locomotive production.

Powered by a 12-cylinder, turbocharged, 2,000-hp 251-series prime mover, the C420’s direct competitor in 1963 was the EMD GP18. In fact, EMD did not offer a 12-cylinder, 2,000-hp prime mover until the GP39 model was produced in 1969. The shorter 12-cylinder engine block allowed the C420 to have its distinctive set-back cab and extended short hood.

The first road to purchase the C420 was the Lehigh & Hudson River, with its first two units built in 1963. The largest fleet was purchased by the Long Island Railroad, with 30 units built between 1963 and 1968. All were equipped with a high short hood which housed a steam generator for passenger service. Over time, the largest fleet of C420s was amassed by the Louisville & Nashville. While only 26 units were purchased new, their total fleet grew to well over 60 units through mergers and acquisitions. The C420 can still be found in daily service today in the US. Currently the largest fleet of C420s is operated by the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad.

This run of Atlas C420 Locomotives feature Phase 2 versions, featuring both Low & High Nose models. Early phase 2 locomotives feature phase 1-style walkways/sills with stanchions mounted into the top walkway deck (referred to as “Phase 2a” models). Later phase 2 locomotives feature a revised configuration where the stanchions are mounted to the sides of the sill (referred to as “Phase 2b” models). Phase 2a production ran from December 1964 through September 1965. Phase 2b units were produced from December 1965 through the end of C420 locomotive production in August 1968.

Features

  • Flat or “step” pilots used where appropriate
  • Long hood with or without dynamic brake used where appropriate
  • 3,100 or 2,400 gallon fuel tank used when appropriate per road name

2nd Annual R/C Day and Swap Meet

We just completed our 2nd Annual R/C Day and Swap Meet and we had a fantastic time. Although the weather was hot, we had no rain. We had over 150 people show up and run their cars or our loaners from Traxxas. Drag racing, road course racing, and the “Jump of Death” were all big hits. Thanks to In The Box Concessions and Weldon’s Ice Cream for keeping us all well fed with delicious food and cool treats. Visit our photo gallery for some really neat shots of the days activities.

3rd Annual Smoke Stack Hobby Shop Field Trip

This year’s big event will be on August 20th. We will be visiting Bellevue, Ohio to visit the Mad River and Nickel Plate Railroad Museum. The Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum was opened in 1976 as a lasting bicentennial project featuring our local railroad heritage. It has since become the largest rail museum in Ohio. We will have a private tour of the museum, after which you will be free to roam the grounds on your own.

After the museum tour, we will be heading to lunch at Twin Lakes Golf Course & Restaurant where we will enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet.

From lunch we will move on to Kemper Rail Park to take part in Rail Fest 2016. The Kemper Rail Park is a special viewing area and is situated at the West end of Norfolk Southern’s Bellevue Terminal, the largest classification rail yard on NS, and the 2nd largest in the United States. You’ll see trains headed to, and coming from Chicago, Fort Wayne, St Louis, Toledo, Detroit, Columbus, and nearby Sandusky. You’ll also see the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad come in and out of Bellevue. 100 train movements per day through this area is possible, with a variety of foreign locomotives as well.

Tickets are $70 and will include your round trip transportation, the museum tour, lunch, the Kemper Yard viewing, and snacks and drinks on the bus. Space is limited to the first 55 people who sign up. Signup deadline is July 18th. You can signup/purchase tickets by calling The Smoke Stack Hobby Shop at 740-653-0404 or online by clicking here.

Departure from Lancaster will be at 7:30 a.m. and we anticipate returning at 7:30 p.m. Our departure point and parking are from Lancaster Lowe’s, on Memorial Drive (Rt. 33) at the northwest end of town. If you are located in Columbus, we will be making a pickup stop at the Meijer in Lewis Center at 8870 Columbus Pike (US23) Lewis Center, OH, 43035. Pickup time will be approximately 8:30 a.m.

Oh, and for those of you who were with us last year, we have upgraded the bus! 🙂 We will have an on-board bathroom, reclining seats, overhead luggage area, air conditioning, DVD, and Wi-Fi.

Fourth of July Parade – Lancaster

The rain stopped just long enough for Lancaster to stage the annual 4th of July Parade. We had a great time seeing everyone along the route. We dressed up the truck like an old-time steam engine complete with whistle and bell sounds. We also built a rolling R/C ramp that we towed with a Rock Crawler and used two short course trucks to jump it along the route. It was a big hit!

Festival Fair Day

Join us Saturday, July 23rd from 9-3 at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds for Festival Fair Day. Tickets are $5 each with kids free. Family freindly events will feature:

  • Rick Kelley the Entertainer
  • Supa Fun Band
  • Live on Stage – The Rainforest

With a suspension system equipped on all wheels, the Blizzard clears every challenge in its path including rocky obstacles, steep hill climbs and gravel or sand that would trap a machine with normal tires. Twin 370 motors and twin KA-17W ESCs deliver forward, reverse, left/right turning and pivot (turns on the spot) As this belted vehicle is fully pre-assembled there are no difficult assembly steps or other work to complete before enjoying its sophisticated mechanics. In addition, control of the blade arm with the transmitter adds another fascinating aspect to the Blizzard. For great fun in the sand or snow, the Blizzard can match your outdoor lifestyle and go wherever you want to go.

This month is the 2nd Annual R/C Day and Swap Meet at the Fairgrounds. This year’s event will be held on June 26th from noon – 3 p.m. We plan on having a road course, drag strip with timing, and a sled pulling area. New this year we will have In The Box Concessions  and Weldon’s Ice Cream on site to provide food.. As usual there is no charge to participate. Just come and run what you brung!

Swap Meet

Also new is the Swap Meet portion of the day. Due to limited space at the hobby shop, we have decided to hold the Swap Meet at the fairgrounds in conjunction with the R/C Day. So bring your hobby related items to sell or trade. Set up your own tables, spread a blanket, or sell out of your trunk.

3rd Annual Smoke Stack Hobby Shop Field Trip

This year’s big event will be on August 20th. We are planning a trip to Bellevue, Ohio to visit the Mad River and Nickel Plate Railroad Museum. The Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum was opened in 1976 as a lasting bicentennial project featuring our local railroad heritage. It has since become the largest rail museum in Ohio. We will have a private tour of the museum, after which you will be free to roam the grounds on your own.

After the museum tour, we will be heading to lunch. We are still working on the details of that and will have them available when we have it finalized.

Additional details, including final pricing, will be made available as we get those sorted out. We anticipate the cost to be in the $70-75 range and it will include your roundtrip transportation, the museum tour, lunch, the Kemper Yard viewing, and snacks and drinks on the bus. Space is limited to the first 55 people who sign up. We will send out a final notice with a link for signup once the last details are in place. Signup will be available online or via phone on June 15th.

Departure from Lancaster will be at 7:30 a.m. and we anticipate returning at 7:30 p.m. Our departure point and parking are yet to be determined. If you are located in Columbus, we are working on a pickup spot in that direction so you don’t have to come all the way down to Lancaster. Oh, and for those of you who were with us last year, we have upgraded the bus! 🙂 We will have an on-board bathroom, reclining seats, overhead luggage area, air conditioning, DVD, and Wi-Fi.

Stack Talk – Vol.4 Issue 3

NEWS

March was a busy month for us as some teasers of warm weather brought the R/C people out of hibernation. As a result, we have stocked even more vehicles, drones, airplanes, helicopters, and boats and are constantly adjusting our selection so that you have the widest possible variety of vehicles to choose from.

At the end of the month, we took the show on the road to the F.O.R.K.S. annual Air Show and Swap Meet at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds. There was a great turnout and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The weather was nice enough that Butch was able to take our large Yuneec drone outside for some demo flights.

April has started just as busy as March ended as we headed west to a couple of shows. First we attended the Springfield Train Show on April 3rd, then went off to Dayton for the WrightCon Model show on April 8th and 9th. We can now take a breather as we prepare for our very own Smoke Stack R/C Day at the Fairgrounds on June 26th. We are also going to fold our outdoor hobby swap meet into the same date at the fairgrounds. This will hopefully assure us of better weather than we have been getting the last few years in April.
