Stack Talk – Vol.2 Issue 11

Technically, it’s still Fall.  But as I look out my window I see a Winter Wonderland of snow accompanied by bitter cold temperatures.  That light at the end of the tunnel is not daylight but the Christmas Express bearing down on us at full speed. So now it’s time to shift from Fall mode to Winter mode.  And that means Thanksgiving and the start of the Christmas season.

Christmas Elves hard at work decorating.

We at The Smoke Stack Hobby Shop have been in Winter mode for some time now. In addition to stocking all the must-have items for Christmas and beyond, the shop elves have been decorating and generally making merry these past few weeks. Be sure to stop in and see our annual Christmas O scale layout!

With the falling temps, the nitro R/C guys will soon be parking their vehicles for the winter, but the electric guys have all winter to play in the snow.  And we have some truly awesome vehicles for the snow!

Yeti XL

Just in are two VERY large cars that impress as soon as you see them.  First up is the Yeti XL.  This electric monster buggy measures almost 26″ long, 16″ wide, and over 11″ tall.  It’s a four-wheel drive, shaft driven buggy with a Castle Creations 2200 kV, 4 pole brushless motor and can accept 2 2S or 3S LiPo battery packs with Dean’s connectors.  This is one impressively large rock crawler.  So much so that members of our own staff are lining up to buy it.  We should have an in-depth review of this beast soon!

Losi DB XL

Now if you thought the Yeti was big, get a load of this.  This is the 1/5 scale, gas-powered,  Losi DB XL.  This 4WD behemoth is over 30″ long, 19″ wide, is over 12″ tall, and weighs more than 28 lbs. It has a 23cc CY engine and has 7.8″ diameter tires. With a rigid injection molded roll cage built on a reinforced 5mm aluminum chassis, the Desert Buggy XL can withstand the punishment of the most brutal driving styles. The Desert Buggy XL is also in for the long haul with a large-capacity gas tank that provides over 40 minutes of relentless action on a full tank.

To get an idea of just how big these vehicles are, this photo shows a variety of vehicles in different scales.  Click the image to get a full-size photo (Hint: you can click on any image on this page for a larger view).  The vehicle in the front-left is a 1/18 scale truggy. The green vehicle next to it is a 1/8 scale Traxxas Summit. Next to the Summit is the 1/5 scale Losi gas buggy, then the 1/8 scale Yeti XL.  The small green vehicle in the front-right is a 1/10 scale buggy.  Just to give you some perspective, 1/10 scale is the most common scale you see.

These two buggies are at the extreme end of the price spectrum, ringing the bell at $799 and $999 respectively.  But we haven’t neglected the mainstream vehicles either.  We have a large selection of vehicles ranging from $109 and up.  All our vehicles are hobby quality, meaning they can be repaired if needed, unlike some products you can get at big box retailers.  And we service all the vehicles we sell.

For those of you who prefer to pursue your hobbies in the warmth of the indoors, we have a full selection of items for you.  For the modelers, new armor and autos kits are arriving daily.  And we have a large selection of paints, brushes, glue, and modeling tools to get you started and keep you going. Below is a sampling of some of the new armor and aircraft kits we have:

For the model railroaders, we have stocked up on a wide assortment of trains sets in N, HO, and O scales.  We have scenery tools and accessories from mailbags and post boxes to gas station pumps and soda machines.  We have some neat new HO scale vehicles that have working head and taillights. And we have Christmas-themed cars and accessories in N, HO and O scales including many Lionel Polar Express accessories.  Just arrived are the new O scale box cars from MTH with blinking crossbucks. These have very bright LEDs and run off track power. For the HO modelers we have just received a nice assortment of Bar Mills laser cut wood kits.  These are fabulously detailed kits and are easy to build. The photo shows the Star Diner.
