Stack Talk – Vol.3 Issue 3

Mother Nature has recently teased us with a 70 degree day.  Boy, it was wonderful.  It also served to remind us that Spring is only a week away.  We’ve already changed to Daylight Savings Time, so everything is starting to line up for our favorite outdoor activities.

Speaking of outdoor activities, 51 and I made a visit to Mt. Pleasant this past Sunday to watch the Rock Crawlers do their thing.  It was a beautiful day and the turnout was over 20 cars!  They had a great time crawling up and along the mount as well as challenging each other to more and more impossible routes.  We enjoyed the variety of vehicles and had a great time visiting with the gang.  They are out there most Sunday’s starting at 9:30 a.m.  If you are interested in joining them they welcome everyone.  Just give us a call at the shop for details and to check on time.

While we are on the subject of R/C cars, I should mention that we are having a Spring Nitro Tune-up Special.  For $29.99 you can have your nitro car tuned.  It includes carburetor adjustment, new glow plug, new air filter, and we top off your tank with either Traxxas 20% Top Fuel or 20% VP Powermaster Fuel, your choice.

Arrma Kraton (l) and Arrma Talion (r)

We also have some exciting new arrivals in the R/C car department.  For those who like to go fast, we have the 1:8 scale Arrma Kraton and the Arrma Talion.  Both vehicles feature 4-wheel drive and 2050kV brushless motors.  The ESC is 180A with a built-in cooling fan, waterproof and capable of handling 4-6 cell LiPo batteries.  The Kraton comes with dBoots Copperhead tires while the Talion features dBoots Exabyte tires.  Both of these monsters are capable of 60+ MPH!!

Losi 5ive-T

For those who like to go big, we have the Losi 5ive T.  This is the short course version of the Losi DB XL.  Bigger. Faster. Stronger. The 1/5-scale Losi® 5IVE-T® 4WD Off-Road Racing Truck is the closest thing to a full-size vehicle in realism, performance and experience. It features a 4WD drivetrain based on the racing- and award-winning 8IGHT™ buggy platfrom, Spektrum™ telemetry receiver, installed sensors and 1/4-scale servos. And since it’s a Bind-N-Drive™ vehicle, you complete it with the DSM® transmitter of your choice. There’s really nothing like driving an RC truck as big as this.  Check out the photo of the 1:5 scale giant compared to a normal 1:10 scale and a 1:18 scale vehicle!

Introducing the Slash 4X4. Of course, it’s what you would expect from a Slash; tough, fast, fun, and yes, 4-wheel drive! All-new from the ground up, Slash 4X4 is not a conversion or a retrofit—it’s a completely and purpose-built for over-the-top speed and performance. The long list of features includes an all-new rigid chassis, new super-efficient shaft drive, new race-bred suspension, new steering system, Revo® sealed differentials, Velineon™ brushless power, and a TQi 2.4GHz radio system.  Top speed? 40+mph with the included 3000mAh 7-cell battery pack. Power Up™ to the MXL-6s (it drops right in!) and 80+mph is in your reach.

Do you like the water?  We now have boats back in stock.  From ProBoat we have the ProBoat Blackjack 24-inch Catamaran with Brushless motor.  This ready-to-run craft has a 2000Kv brushless motor, 30A ESC, and precision servo.

The Shockwave 26-inch BL Deep-V RTR is equipped with a 2000Kv water-cooled brushless motor and LiPo compatible 30-amp ESC. Deep-V powerboats are all about precision; the ShockWave Deep-V is no exception delivering pulse-pounding turns using an authoritative servo you just don’t typically find in a deep-v of its size.

And if you’re not into speedboats, we have the Westward 18 Sailboat.  This 19*inch RTR beauty provides entry-level sailboating enthusiasts with the perfect model when entering the hobby. The Westward comes 95% prebuilt, requiring little preparation time to hit the water. Don’t let the small size fool you, with features like a mini-sail winch servo and a Spektrum™ 2.4GHz radio systemallowing enthusiasts to easily and affordably get into the hobby.  The model’s small size provides ease of use, allows users to run the model in fairly small bodies of water and makes transporting the model easy. The boat comes pre-rigged and -assembled with the only requirement of the user being to install the 4 AA receiver batteries and 4 AA transmitter batteries (not included). In less than 5 minutes you’ll be ready to hit the water and begin your journey into the serene world of RC sailboating.

Murph took one of our Woodland Scenics Landmark Structures Corner Emporium O scale kits and built it as a showcase model.  He rated the kit as an excellent bang for the buck.  The fit and finish was very good with lots of nice details included in the box.  It only took him a couple of evenings of work, including painting.  We think you’ll agree the model turned out fabulous!!

Not to be outdone, one of our customer’s took a J.L. Innovative laser cut wood kit to do a sample build.  Randy Hunt’s specialty is plastic models in the Sci-Fi genre, but we convinced him to give a wood kit a try. He too was able to finish his project in only a few evenings of work.  Although there were a number of small detail parts, he said the build was enjoyable and the quality of the kit was very good.  He said he would definatley recommend this to anyone who would like to take on a project with a little more challenge.  The final result is well worth the little extra effort.  With laser cut kits you get much more detail than is available in many of the average plastic kits on the market today.  You can see the evidence of Randy’s fine work below.

justplugAnother new product that has just arrived is the Just Plug system from Woodland Scenics.  No electrical knowledge or special tools needed…just plug and you’re done! The Just Plug™ Lighting System is a quick and easy way to add realism and interest to new and existing layouts and other projects. Individual bulb brightness can be controlled, and the modular design allows for easy expansion. Just Plug is compatible with DCC and works for any scale.  In fact, this would be a perfect fit for either of the two kits built by Murph or Randy.

We have also expanded our selection of styrene products.  We now carry a full line of Evergreen Styrene materials for modeling in all scales.  From the model railroader to the ship builder we have the scratch building tools you need!  Over the past year we have aggressively expanded our selections of paint, glue, tools, and accessories.

New from Over The Top Trestles is an O scale trestle set that allows you to double-stack your layout- putting twice the trains in your existing layout!.  The trestles are made from a har polypropylene plastic and come in 3 colors – dark grey, light grey, and natural.  They have a height of 6.5 inches, a width of 7 inches and clear most engines and cars using O-31 or larger track.  You can use O scale on top and bottom, or standard gauge on top and O scale on the bottom.  A 12-piece set sells for $59.99 (Hint: This would look awesome with a Lionel or MTH set on the bottom and the Batman Subway set on top!!)

We have lots more new items in shop.  I guess you’ll just have to stop in to see them all!  And don’t forget, the 40th year of the F.O.R.K.S Annual Model Show will be held March 28th at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds in Lancaster from 8:30 – 1:00 p.m.  If you are in the area stop by and check out the amazing array of radio controlled craft on display.  And stop by and say hello to our own Butch, who will be there representing the shop.
