Fall is rapidly approaching and that means football, falling leaves, and cooler temps. It also means that the Smoke Stack Hobby Shop Mobile Unit will be hitting the road. We know many of you travel long distances to get to our shop, and this is our attempt to bring the shop to you. Over time we hope to expand our reach into many of the communities where our customers live. We are starting small to get the feel of things, so our first trip of September will be to the Canal Winchester Labor Day Festival. If you are in the area on September 5th, 6th, or 7th stop by and see us.
September 12th the Mobile Unit will be in Racine, Ohio for their Party in the Park Festival. Come on down and enjoy the classic car show with us.
September 19th will find some of us on the road to the Age of Steam Roundhouse (see below) while the Mobile Unit will be on the road to Dayton for the Dayton Area Plastic Modelers Fall Invitational. The show will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at The Vineyard Annex. 4051 Indian Ripple Rd., Beavercreek, OH and is open to all interested modelers and their models. Click here for more information.
We still have some tickets available for the Age of Steam Roundhouse Tour on September 19th. Your $60 ticket gets you roundtrip bus transportation to the Roundhouse from Lancaster, a two-hour tour of the facility, and an Amish buffet lunch at the Dutch Valley Restaurant in Sugarcreek. Tickets can be purchased by calling the shop at 740-653-0404. You may also purchase tickets online at our web site. Click on EVENTS in the left menu. This is a rare opportunity to visit a practically new, working roundhouse. This is not some museum piece or a falling relic. The AOS Roundhouse actively rebuilds and restores steam engines from around the country. For photos and additional information on the roundhouse, click here.
In the last blog post we talked about the Yuneec Q500 with the 4k camera. Our in-store demo unit has the HD camera, which while not as powerful as the 4k, is still pretty darn good. You can see a sample of it here, as we took the Yuneeq outside the shop and went straight up to film the Lancaster area. This also gives you a pretty good idea of just how stable the Yuneeq is and how easy it is to fly it. It looks like it’s on a rotating pole, but that is actually just how stable this large quadcopter is! The initial view is looking towards the intersection of Rts. 22 and 33. Then we pan left to follow Rt. 22 as it heads toward Chillicothe, eventually coming round full circle.
Just arrived is this O-27 compatible MoonPie box car from Lionel. It has die-cast,sprung trucks, operating couplers, a metal frame, and opening door. We are also continually adding to our consignment collection of O scale locomotives and rolling stock. There is an assortment of MTH Railking and Premier stock, Lionel, Atlas, and Williams. Also a large and very nice assortment of die-cast vehicles. You can see most of these items on our web site under Estate Sales on the left menu, but there are quite a few special items that are not listed online, so be sure to stop in to check those out..
Another new arrival is the Dromida Vista quadcopter. The Vista is slightly larger than its predecessor, the Ominus, and also comes in 4 color selections (red, blue, green, and white). While this new beast may not have the power to reach the moon, it will do quite well in your backyard. The frame is made of a rugged plastic that can take a lot of abuse. There are four flight modes (Easy, Normal, Advanced, Expert) to assure an easy learning curve and also allow for some advanced aeronautics. This quad can also perform flips at the touch of a button. It comes with a Dromida MR100 SLT radio with digital trims, flight mode button and flip button. The transmitter is powered by four included AAA batteries. And the receiver is compatible with other SLT transmitters such as the Tactic TTX650. Finally, there are high-intensity multi-color LEDs for easy tracking and orientation. Included in this ready-to-fly set is an 850mAh 1S LiPo battery and a USB type charger.
With the cooler weather approaching it means some of you will be shifting your hobbies indoors. In anticipation of that, we have started to stock many more accessories in N, HO, and O scales. Figures, buildings, trees, vehicles, fences, etc. Too many to list here. You’ll simply have to drop in and check them out.
For those of you that like to build, we now have the TrakPower digital soldering station. The digital LED display shows selected temperature, heating status, and operational alerts. Push button controls adjust heat in precise 1 degree increments. The security key locks in the selected temperature, preventing accidental changes. This unit will hold the selected temperature within 1.8 degrees F (1C) while idle.
Our last model show (at the IPMS Nationals) really depleted our in-house stock of plastic models quite a bit. So since then, Murph has been busy getting some new exciting models lined up, paying particular attention to building up our sailing ship inventory.. We have already seen a selection of newer car and boat kits arrive, and we are expecting some nice new armor and aircraft kits in the near future. More details on those when they arrive.
September is promising to be a very busy month at the SSHS. We have almost every weekend booked with some kind of event. Hopefully we will see you at one of those. If not, drop in to say hello and browse the aisles – every week something new and different arrives.
